Zia Park fails to stop wagering during Monday’s 3rd race
When Monday's third race at Zia Park started, wagering never stopped.
Betting for a race closes when a stop-wagering command is sent to tote at the start of the race. That did not occur when the third race began at 3:03:39 p.m. EST and never closed until 3:07:09, 3 minutes and 30 seconds later.
The one-mile, 70-yard allowance race took 1:41.72 to complete, meaning that wagering remained open for 1 minute, 49 seconds after the completion of the race won by 4-5 favorite Playthemarker.
"While we are still investigating (Monday's) incident, I would ask that if your location can identify any wagers placed after the pool close time, please contact me," Penn National Gaming simulcast manager David Koepp said in an email sent 2 hours and 34 minutes after wagering closed on race 3.
The Pennsylvania-based gaming company Penn National owns Zia Park. Its director of Racing Chris McErlean said Tuesday morning that that there were no updates.
Overall on its 10-race card, Zia handled $1,156,519, which was 19.9 percent of the daily market. On Monday last week on Monday, Zia handled $1,246,624 on a similar 10-race card for a market share of 18.2 percent.
