Z: Better to Have Loved and Lost
There’s a fine fine line between a lover and a friend,
And there’s a fine fine line between reality and pretend.
And you never know when you reach the top if it was worth the uphill climb,
There’s a fine fine line between love and a waste of your time.
–Lyrics from the musical "Avenue Q"
Reality intersected with pretend last weekend at Churchill Downs for the Breeders’ Cup. The two-day event included brilliant filly performances, a 2-year-old colt standout, and a red-hot jockey brawl.
On Friday, Nov. 5, the filly Life At Ten should have been scratched before her race. Even jockey John Velazquez complained during the warm-up, on national television, that she didn’t feel right. Her trainer blamed a Lasix shot but did nothing to protect her from running. Bettors got drubbed.
