Works + videos: 4 Breeders’ Cup Classic horses lead the tab
Breeders’ Cup Classic contenders Baeza, Sierra Leone, Nevada Beach and Contrary Thinking worked Saturday in their final drills before next Saturday’s $7 million race at Del Mar.
Trained by John Shirreffs, Baeza worked five furlongs at Santa Anita in 1:01.6 under Héctor Berrios, who rode him to victory in the Grade 1 Pennsylvania Derby last month and is expected to stay with him for the Breeders’ Cup Classic.
Defending Classic winner Sierra Leone had his final drill at Saratoga, breezing a half-mile in 48.7 seconds on the Oklahoma dirt training track for trainer Chad Brown.

“He’s doing great, and this work was as good or better than he’s worked all year,” Brown said. “He’s coming into the race like last year, very well, and he’s been working great over the past few weeks. I didn’t think it was possible to build off the last two works, but he somehow managed to even work a touch better today. He’s really in good form.”
Nevada Beach, who won the Goodwood (G1) last month at Santa Anita, worked six furlongs in 1:12.2 at Santa Anita for trainer Bob Baffert.
“He is not a great work horse, but he went well,” Baffert said. “He has never run against this kind of competition, but I have always been very high on him. I don’t think the distance is going to be a problem for him.”
Contrary Thinking, who controversially was pre-entered in the Classic without a stakes victory on his résumé, breezed a half-mile in 49.77 seconds at Belmont Park. The 4-year-old allowance winner reportedly may be denied entry into the Breeders’ Cup. According to BloodHorse, that is because of a California rule that says horses must try to win any race they start. Trained by Brown, Contrary Thinking raced as a pacemaker for stablemate Sierra Leone in the Whitney (G1) and Jockey Club Gold Cup (G1).
Nysos, expected to be one of the leading contenders in the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile, also put in his final work at Santa Anita on Saturday morning. The Baffert trainee worked six furlongs on the dirt in 1:11.0, fastest of six at the distance. The son of Nyquist is a neck shy of perfect in six starts and comes into the Dirt Mile off of a 2 3/4-length victory as the 1-10 favorite in the San Diego Handicap (G3) at Del Mar in July.
