Works tab: Elite Power drills ahead of possible start in Met Mile

Elite Power, last year's champion sprinter in North America, continued to work toward his 2023 stateside debut on Saturday with a four furlong work in 49.8 seconds at Churchill Downs.

The work for the 5-year-old Bill Mott-trained son of Curlin, winner of the 2022 Breeders' Cup Sprint and the 2023 Riyadh Dirt Sprint (G3) going about six furlongs at King Abdulaziz Racecourse in Saudi Arabia on Feb. 25, was the 32nd fastest of 50 works at the distance. 

It was the third work for Elite Power since he recorded his first timed workout since the Riyadh race on April 17 at Churchill Downs.

Daily Racing Form reported this week that Mott was aiming Elite Power at either the Metropolitan Mile (G1) or the True North (G2) on the Belmont Stakes undercard on June 10.

Elite Power was one of 40 graded stakes winners who recorded timed workouts Saturday at North American racetracks:

Faiza (Girvin), a Grade 1 winner (2022 Starlet), worked six furlongs in 1:12.8 at Santa Anita on Saturday morning. It was the second fastest of four works at the distance. Her previous work was seven days ago going five furlongs at Santa Anita. In her last start she won the Santa Anita Oaks (G2) going 1 1/16 miles on the main track at Santa Anita on April 8 for trainer Bob Baffert.

Blazing Sevens (Good Magic), a Grade 1 winner (2022 Champagne), worked five furlongs in 1:00.9 at Belmont Park on Saturday morning. It was the fastest of six works at the distance. His previous work was eight days ago going four furlongs at Belmont Park. In his last start he placed third in the Blue Grass (G1) going 1 1/8 miles on the main track at Keeneland on April 8 for trainer Chad Brown.

Chez Pierre (Mehmas), a Grade 1 winner (2023 Maker's Mark Mile), worked four furlongs in 49.6 seconds at Fair Hill on Saturday morning. It was the 10th fastest of 19 works at the distance. His previous work was seven days ago going four furlongs at Fair Hill. In his last start he won the Maker's Mark Mile (G1) going one mile on the turf at Keeneland on April 14 for trainer Arnaud Delacour.

Rattle N Roll (Connect), a Grade 1 winner (2021 Breeders' Futurity), worked four furlongs in 48.0 seconds at Churchill Downs on Saturday morning. It was the sixth fastest of 50 works at the distance. This was his first work since his last race. In his last start he won the Ben Ali (G3) going 1 3/16 miles on the main track at Keeneland on April 22 for trainer Kenny McPeek.

Classic Causeway (Giant's Causeway), a Grade 1 winner (2022 Belmont Derby Invitational), worked four furlongs in 46.8 seconds at Churchill Downs on Saturday morning. It was the fastest of 50 works at the distance. This was his first work since his last race. In his last start he placed sixth in the Oaklawn Handicap (G2) going 1 1/8 miles on the main track at Oaklawn on April 22 for trainer Kenny McPeek.

C Z Rocket (City Zip), a two-time Grade 2 winner (2020 Santa Anita Sprint Championship, 2020 Pat O'Brien), worked four furlongs in 49.2 seconds at San Luis Rey Training Center on Saturday morning. It was the sixth fastest of 21 works at the distance. His previous work was eight days ago going four furlongs at San Luis Rey Training Center. In his last start he placed eighth in the Dubai Golden Shaheen (G1) going about six furlongs on the dirt at Meydan Racecourse on March 25 for trainer Peter Miller.
