Works report: Pinehurst firing bullets towards a summer return

2022 Saudi Derby (G3) winner Pinehurst, unraced since being eased in the UAE Derby (G2), continued on the comeback trail Thursday with a five-furlong work at Santa Anita.

Recording his seventh official workout since returning from the Middle East, Pinehurst went handily in 1:01.00, which was the fastest of 18 drills at the distance. That makes three bullet workouts in a row. But what these bullets are aiming for is still uncertain. No specific race has been identified for his return.

SF Racing, Starlight Racing, and Madaket Stables' colt is now in trainer Sean McCarthy's care as his previous trainer Bob Baffert serves out his suspension. After a gutsy win in the Saudi Derby, Pinehurst's UAE Derby effort was cut short when he took a clump of dirt in the eye and was taken back after tightly pressing Summer Is Tomorrow through the early stages.
