Works report: Brightwork, Baeza lead 23 on Monday morning
Grade 1 winner Brightwork, who has been off the work tab for over five months, returned to work Monday morning at Keeneland. The daughter of Outwork, trained by John Ortiz, worked three furlongs in 35.6 seconds.
Brightwork won her first four starts at age 2, including the Grade 1 Spinaway, in 2023. Though she raced only twice as a sophomore, both of those races were solid outings. She won the Prioress (G3) in gritty fashion over Two Sharp in her seasonal debut, then finished third behind Zeitlos in the Thoroughbred Club of America (G2) at Keeneland, her first attempt versus older company.
Looking at 3-year-olds in the Kentucky Derby picture, the only one to work Monday morning was Baeza. The son of McKinzie, a half-brother to both 2023 Kentucky Derby winner Mage and 2024 Belmont Stakes winner Dornoch, worked four furlongs at Santa Anita in 50.0 seconds. It was his first drill since a second-place finish in the Santa Anita Derby (G1). As of Monday morning, Baeza needs four defections in front of him to make it into the Kentucky Derby field.
