Works report: Baeza puts final touches on Belmont prep
Baeza, third in the Kentucky Derby in his most recent start, did his final work Monday before an expected start in Saturday's Belmont Stakes. Trained by John Shirreffs, Baeza worked four furlongs in 48.96 over the Oklahoma training track.
A son of McKinzie, Baeza is a half-brother to both 2024 Belmont Stakes winner Dornoch and 2023 Kentucky Derby winner Mage. He still seeks his first graded-stakes win, but has run well in both his top-level tries. He earned his ticket to the Kentucky Derby after a close second behind Journalism in the Santa Anita Derby (G1). Then, despite a far-outside post for the Kentucky Derby, he had plenty left to finish strongly in the lane, crossing the wire third behind Sovereignty and Journalism. The three horses will clash again Saturday in the Belmont.
