Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Sierra Leone was put through a maintenance work Sunday morning in New York as he is prepared for a pair of Grade 1 races this summer.

A 4-year-old Gun Runner colt owned by Peter Brant, Coolmore, Westerberg and Brook Smith drilled a half-mile in 50.0 seconds at Belmont Park. He continues to work back from a third-place finish March 22 in the New Orleans Classic (G2) at Fair Grounds.

The 2004 champion 3-year-old male is targeting the Stephen Foster (G1) on June 28 at Churchill Downs. The race is a win-and-you’re-in qualifier for the Breeders’ Cup Classic, which will be at Del Mar for the second year in a row.

“He is doing fine. He is idling for a little while and is probably not going to run until the Stephen Foster in late June,” trainer Chad Brown told the New York Racing Association. “Today was a solo (breeze), just maintenance to stretch his legs. I might pick it up with him next week and do something a little more serious.”.

Brown also has talked about sending the two-time Grade 1 winner to the Stephen Foster to the Whitney (G1) in August at Saratoga.
