Saturday tab: Thorpedo Anna, Sierra Leone lead BC crowd

From Thorpedo Anna and Sierra Leone to Vahva and Cagliostro to strings of horses for Chad Brown and Phil D’Amato, there was no shortage of Breeders’ Cup candidates on the Saturday work tab across the country.

Saratoga

On the Oklahoma training track at Saratoga, multiple Grade 1 winner Thorpedo Anna breezed five furlongs in 1:00.4. She posted the sharp work in company with multiple stakes-placed 4-year-old gelding Denington, who was clocked at 1:00.5. The 3-year-old filly started behind Denington but was well in front during the gallop-out.

“It was a fantastic work, actually,” said trainer Kenny McPeek, adding that Thorpedo Anna will work again before heading west for the Breeders’ Cup Distaff on Nov. 2 at Del Mar. “She is going to work next weekend.”

McPeek said Thorpedo Anna met the objectives of the move under regular exercise rider Danny Ramsey.

“Just sit off Denington, be patient and range up to him and finish down the lane,” McPeek said. “He is a nice horse in his own right. He is stakes-placed and has made quite a bit of money, but she is hitting on all cylinders.”

Thorpedo Anna, who captured the Kentucky Oaks (G1) in May, boasts a 9: 7-2-0 record with $2,803,663 in earnings including additional Grade 1 wins in the Cotillion last out Sept. 21 at Parx, Saratoga’s Coaching Club American Oaks and Acorn along with the Fantasy (G2), all this year. She also stole the hearts of many racing fans when she was beaten be only a head in the Travers (G1).

Thorpedo Anna likely will be a short price in the Distaff along with reigning champion older dirt mare Idiomatic, who worked a half-mile in 49.8 seconds for dual Eclipse Award winner Brad Cox on Friday at Churchill Downs.

“I don’t worry about the horses that I don’t train,” McPeek said of the much-anticipated matchup.

Belmont Park

Dual graded-stakes winner Sierra Leone posted a half-mile work for the $7 million Classic as one of many Breeders’ Cup hopefuls to breeze Saturday at Belmont Park for four-time Eclipse Award-winning trainer Chad Brown.

The son of Gun Runner hit the dirt training track shortly after reopening from a renovation break at 9:30 a.m. EDT and breezed solo in 49.25 seconds over the fast track. It was his third work at Belmont since moving south from Saratoga three weeks ago.

“It went super. He worked a half-mile and galloped out six furlongs in 1:13 and 1. It was extremely impressive,” Brown said. “The horse has been training really well, and I'm really excited about him going into the Breeders’ Cup.”

Sierra Leone looks to cap a sophomore campaign that includes wins in the Blue Grass (G1) at Keeneland and the Risen Star (G2) at Fair Grounds as well as on-the-board efforts in marquee Grade 1 events when a narrowly beaten second in the Kentucky Derby and third at Saratoga in both the Belmont Stakes and the Travers.

Brown said he is hopeful a winning result could put Sierra Leone in the mix for Eclipse Award honors as champion 3-year-old male as he takes on Travers winner Fierceness for the third straight race.

“I think Fierceness is clearly the leader of the division, and it’s well earned. I know some of these horses have taken turns beating each other, but he has had a spectacular summer in my opinion, and he’s not only the one to beat in the Classic, but also the leader of the division right now,” Brown said. “But if Sierra Leone was to break through and take down a race like the Breeders’ Cup Classic facing mostly older horses, I think he’d be in serious consideration given his consistency.”

Brown also sent out top sophomore middle-distance competitor Domestic Product as he readies to make his final career start in the two-turn Dirt Mile before retiring to stud alongside his sire Practical Joke at Coolmore’s Ashford Stud in Kentucky.

The dark bay colt, a Kentucky homebred for Klaravich Stables, covered a half-mile solo in 48.42 in an earlier set before Sierra Leone.

“Outstanding. More of the same from him. Very consistent,” said Brown, who indicated Domestic Product also would be pre-entered in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint. “He’s gotten stronger and faster as the year has gone on, and I’m really looking forward to his race.”

Domestic Product was last seen winning the H. Allen Jerkens Memorial (G1) on Aug. 24 at the Spa and has put together a strong campaign that includes a 7 1/2-length romp in the Dwyer (G3) in July at Aqueduct and a gutsy win in the Tampa Bay Derby (G3) in March.

Brown also sent out two talented juveniles for half-mile works in Chancer McPatrick in 48.01 and Zulu Kingdom in 48.63 seconds. They are targeting the Juvenile and Juvenile Turf, respectively. Zulu Kingdom worked in company with older, graded-stakes winner Running Bee.

On the filly side, Grade 1-winning homebred Raging Sea, with Flavien Prat up, breezed a half-mile in company with their recent Spinster (G1) runner-up Occult with the pair covering the distance in 49.46 seconds.

"She was traveling well," Prat said. "It was a pretty standard work, and she went good. She’s happy and moving well."

Raging Sea will be entered in the Distaff off three straight graded wins when taking the Shuvee (G2) in July at the Spa, upsetting division leader Idiomatic in the Personal Ensign (G1) on Aug. 24 at the Spa and following with a narrow victory over Batucada in the Beldame (G2) on Oct. 6 at Aqueduct.

Top female sprinter Ways and Means also breezed Saturday, covering four furlongs in 48.21 seconds in company with sophomore filly Pretty Ana. The daughter of Practical Joke notched her first top-level score with an impressive victory in the Test (G1) in August at Saratoga and followed last out with a commanding score in the Gallant Bloom (G2).

“She was the only one last week I thought got a little lost in her work switching to the training track after primarily being based in Saratoga all year,” Brown said. “Today I gave her a workmate, and she worked dynamite. A little bit of focus for her, and she was all business.”

Breeders’ Cup Mile possibility Gina Romantica, who went a solo half-mile in 49.51 seconds, and Juvenile Fillies Turf contender Virgin Colada, who breezed a half-mile in 49.42 in company with older multiple graded-stakes winner Fluffy Socks, also were on the tab.

Keeneland

Trainers Cherie DeVaux and Ignacio Correas put their Breeders’ Cup prospects through main-track works at Keeneland.

Vahva, training ahead of the Filly & Mare Sprint, and Cagliostro, preparing for the Dirt Mile, worked together for DeVaux going five furlongs in 59.8 seconds. Classic candidate Pyrenees breezed a half-mile in company with Stage Raider in 47.2 seconds. More Than Looks, who is bound for the Mile, went a half-mile on his own in 47.6 seconds.

Correas sent out Filly & Mare Turf hopeful Didia for six furlongs in 1:15.4. Mufasa, aiming for the Dirt Mile, did a half-mile in 48.6 seconds.

Chad Brown’s duo Carl Spackler and Chili Flag, who are training for the Breeders’ Cup Mile, worked half-miles on a turf course labeled good. After they went together with a final quarter-mile in 23.0, Carl Spackler was clocked at 50.4 and Chili Flag at 50.6 seconds.

Trainer Charlie Appleby sent out six runners, including three with designs on the Breeders’ Cup, for half-mile works on the turf. His Filly & Mare Turf possibilities are Cinderella’s Dream, who breezed in 49.6, and Beautiful Love, who went in 52.0 seconds. Cinderella’s Dream worked in company with Star Guest. Beautiful Love was in company with Musical Act. Juvenile Turf hopeful Al Qudra worked in 52.8 seconds in company with Cavallo Bay.

Trainer Brad Cox’s Juvenile Turf prospect Destino d’Oro was timed at 51.6 seconds working four furlongs on his own.

Santa Anita

D’Amato’s quintet on the tab included Iron Man Cal for the Juvenile Turf, Thought Process for the Juvenile Fillies Turf and Che Evasora for Distaff. After the works at Santa Anita, D’Amato confirmed all three would be pre-entered in the Breeders’ Cup. He still was undecided about his other two workers, One Magic Philly perhaps for the Filly & Mare Sprint and Vodka With a Twist for the Juvenile Fillies, would go to the championships.

One Magic Philly, winner of the Chillingworth Stakes (G3) on Oct. 5 at Santa Anita, worked four furlongs in 49.6 seconds. The 3-year-old Good Magic filly is a homebred for John Gallegos. Vodka With a Twist, second in the Del Mar Debutante (G1) last out Oct. 7, worked six furlongs in 1:15.2. The Thousand Words filly is owned by Medallion Racing, Omar Aldabbagh and William Strauss.

“I still need to discuss it with the owners,” D’Amato said of the Breeders’ Cup plans for One Magic Philly and Vodka With a Twist.

Iron Man Cal, who won the Zuma Beach (G3) via disqualification Oct. 6 at Santa Anita, worked four furlongs in 49.0 seconds. Thought Process, winner of both the Del Mar Juvenile Fillies Turf and Surfer Girl (G3) on Oct. 6 at Santa Anita, worked four furlongs in 49.8 seconds.

Che Evasora, who went six furlongs in 1:15.8, rounded out D’Amato’s workers. An import from Argentina, Che Evasora finished last in the Zenyatta (G2) when making her U.S. debut Sept. 29 at Santa Anita. The 6-year-old mare by Greenspring owns an automatic berth into the Distaff that was earned when winning a 1 1/4-mile Group 1 stakes in Argentina in May.

Goliad, working six furlongs on the synthetic training track for Hall of Fame trainer Richard Mandella, completed the move in a sharp 1:11.6. Goliad is a candidate for the Breeders’ Cup Mile. Last month when shipping to Kentucky Downs, Goliad won two races in a span of seven days including the Mint Millions (G3) on Sept. 7.

Trainer John Sadler worked a pair of Breeders’ Cup prospects, Kirstenbosch and Supa Speed. Kirstenbosch, a candidate for the Filly & Mare Sprint, worked four furlongs in 48.4 seconds. Fifth in last year’s Filly & Mare Sprint at Santa Anita, Kirstenbosch most recently returned from an eight-month layoff and finished third in the Chillingworth.

Supa Speed, targeting the Juvenile Fillies Turf, worked five furlongs in 1:01.40. The Louisiana-bred daughter of Justify most recently was second in the Del Mar Juvenile Fillies Turf on Sept. 7.

Raging Torrent, The Chosen Vron and Straight No Chaser worked toward expected starts in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint. Raging Torrent, winner of the Pat O’Brien (G3) on Aug. 24 at Del Mar, fired a bullet when going five furlongs from the gate in 59.0 seconds for trainer Doug O’Neill.

The Chosen Vron, fifth in last year’s Breeders’ Cup Sprint, worked four furlongs in 48.8 seconds. Trained and co-owned by Eric Kruljac, the millionaire California-bred most recently was beaten by a neck by Raging Torrent in the Pat O’Brien.

Straight No Chaser, a scintillating winner of the Santa Anita Sprint Championship (G2) on Sept. 29, worked five furlongs in 1:00.4 for trainer Dan Blacker.

Other Breeders’ Cup prospects working were Mile candidate Johannes going five furlongs in 1:01.6 for trainer Tim Yakteen, Juvenile possibility Getaway Car breezing five furlongs in 1:00.2 for Bob Baffert, Filly & Mare Turf contender Anisette running five furlongs in 1:01.6 for Leonard Powell, Dirt Mile or Sprint candidate Dr. Venkam at five furlongs in 1:03.8 for trainer Mark Glatt, There Goes Harvard for the Turf covering five furlongs in 1:01.4 for trainer Michael McCarthy and Turf candidate El Encinal going three furlongs in 38.8 seconds for Francisco Garcia.

Carl Spackler (Lope De Vega), a two-time Grade 1 winner (2024 Turf Mile, 2024 Fourstardave Handicap), worked four furlongs in 50.4 seconds on turf at Keeneland on Saturday morning. It was the third fastest of 10 works at the distance. This was his first work since his last race. In his last start he won the Turf Mile (G1) going one mile on the turf at Keeneland on Oct. 5 for trainer Chad Brown.

Society (Gun Runner), a two-time Grade 1 winner (2024 Ballerina Handicap, 2022 Cotillion), worked five furlongs in 1:00.2 at Churchill Downs on Saturday morning. It was the fastest of 60 works at the distance. Her previous work was seven days ago going four furlongs at Churchill Downs. In her last start she won the Ballerina Handicap (G1) going seven furlongs on the main track at Saratoga on Aug. 24 for trainer Steve Asmussen.

Aspen Grove (Justify), a Grade 1 winner (2023 Belmont Oaks Invitational), worked four furlongs in 51.0 seconds at Santa Anita on Saturday morning. It was the 30th fastest of 31 works at the distance. This was her first work since her last race. In her last start she placed second in the Rodeo Drive (G2) going 1 1/4 miles on the turf at Santa Anita on Oct. 5 for trainer Jack Sisterson.

Chi Town Lady (Verrazano), a Grade 1 winner (2022 Test), worked five furlongs in 1:01.8 at Keeneland on Saturday morning. It was the sixth fastest of 18 works at the distance. Her previous work was seven days ago going four furlongs at Keeneland. In her last start she placed sixth in the Ballerina Handicap (G1) going seven furlongs on the main track at Saratoga on Aug. 24 for trainer Wesley Ward.

Chili Flag (Cityscape), a Grade 1 winner (2024 Just a Game), worked four furlongs in 50.6 seconds on turf at Keeneland on Saturday morning. It was the fourth fastest of 10 works at the distance. Happy American (Runhappy), a Grade 3 winner (2023 Louisiana), worked four furlongs in 50.8 seconds at Churchill Downs on Saturday morning. It was the 116th fastest of 144 works at the distance.
