Workouts: 14 graded winners, 3 Ky. Derby candidates breeze

Preparing for his 7-year-old season, Grade 1 winner Tripoli had a half-mile workout Wednesday morning at Santa Anita.

The Kitten’s Joy horse owned by Hronis Racing and trained by John Sadler went the four furlongs in 48.4 seconds on the fast main track. The winner of the 2021 Pacific Classic (G1) at Del Mar, Tripoli finished third last out Nov. 4 in the Golden Gate Handicap (G3) in Northern California.

Sadler has not said where Tripoli might make his first start of 2024.

There were 14 workouts Wednesday by graded-stakes winners and three more by horses listed in the Las Vegas futures market for Kentucky Derby 2024.

Tripoli (Kitten’s Joy), a Grade 1 winner (2021 Pacific Classic), worked four furlongs in 48.4 seconds at Santa Anita on Wednesday morning. It was the 14th fastest of 49 works at the distance. His previous work was nine days ago going five furlongs at Santa Anita. In his last start he placed third in the Golden Gate Handicap (G3) going 1 1/16 miles on the synthetic at Golden Gate Fields on Nov. 4 for trainer John Sadler.

Masteroffoxhounds (War Front), a two-time Grade 2 winner (2022 John Henry Turf Championship, 2021 San Marcos), worked four furlongs in 49.0 seconds at Santa Anita. It was the 21st fastest of 49 works at the distance. His previous work was 14 days ago going three furlongs at Santa Anita. In his last start he placed 13th in the Breeders’ Cup Mile going one mile on the turf at Santa Anita on Nov. 4 for trainer Phil D’Amato.

Clapton (Brethren), a Grade 2 winner (2023 Lukas Classic), worked five furlongs in 1:01.9 at Palm Meadows. It was the second fastest of eight works at the distance. His previous work was eight days ago going four furlongs at Palm Meadows. In his last start he placed 11th in the Breeders’ Cup Classic going 1 1/4 miles on the main track at Santa Anita on Nov. 4 for trainer Chad Summers.

Instant Coffee (Bolt d’Oro), a Grade 2 winner (2022 Kentucky Jockey Club), worked four furlongs in 49.3 seconds at Palm Meadows. It was the 19th fastest of 46 works at the distance. His previous work was eight days ago going four furlongs at Palm Meadows. In his last start he placed sixth in the Louisiana Derby (G2) going 1 3/16 miles on the main track at Fair Grounds on March 25 for trainer Brad Cox.

Señor Buscador (Mineshaft), a Grade 2 winner (2023 San Diego Handicap), worked five furlongs in 1:00.8 at Gulfstream Park. It was the second fastest of three works at the distance. His previous work was nine days ago going four furlongs at Gulfstream Park. In his last start he placed second in the Cigar Mile Handicap (G2) going one mile on the main track at Aqueduct on Dec. 2 for trainer Todd Fincher.

Candy Man Rocket (Candy Ride), a two-time Grade 3 winner (2023 Runhappy, 2021 Sam F. Davis), worked three furlongs in 37.8 seconds at Payson Park. It was the third fastest of three works at the distance. His previous work was eight days ago going three furlongs at Payson Park. In his last start he placed third in the John A. Nerud (G2) going seven furlongs on the main track at Belmont Park on July 1 for trainer Bill Mott.

Heywoods Beach (Speightstown), a two-time Grade 3 winner (2022 Tokyo City Cup, 2022 Cougar II), worked five furlongs in 1:00.6 at Santa Anita. It was the 12th fastest of 59 works at the distance. His previous work was nine days ago going five furlongs at Santa Anita. In his last start he placed sixth in an allowance race going one mile on the main track at Del Mar on Nov. 24 for Sadler.

Catnip (Kitten’s Joy), a Grade 3 winner (2023 Monmouth), worked five furlongs in 1:01.4 at Fair Grounds. It was the 12th fastest of 30 works at the distance. Lammas (Heeraat), a Grade 3 winner (2022 Berkeley Handicap), worked three furlongs in 38.6 seconds at Golden Gate Fields. It was the faster of two works at the distance. This was his first work since his last race. In his last start he won an allowance race going one mile on the synthetic at Golden Gate Fields on Nov. 26 for trainer Manuel Badilla.

Mr Fisk (Arrogate), a Grade 3 winner (2023 Native Diver), worked four furlongs in 48.2 seconds at Santa Anita. It was the 11th fastest of 49 works at the distance. His previous work was nine days ago going three furlongs at Santa Anita. In his last start he won the Native Diver (G3) going 1 1/8 miles on the main track at Del Mar on Nov. 26 for trainer Bob Baffert.

Never Explain (Street Sense), a Grade 3 winner (2023 Dinner Party), worked four furlongs in 49.6 seconds at Payson Park. It was the third fastest of 15 works at the distance. Sea Streak (Sea Wizard), worked five furlongs in 1:00.4 at Gulfstream Park. It was the fastest of three works at the distance. In his last start he placed second in an allowance race going one mile on the main track at Gulfstream Park on Dec. 9 for trainer Eddie Owens Jr.

Speed Runner (Gun Runner), worked four furlongs in 51.5 seconds at Belmont Park. It was the 29th fastest of 52 works at the distance. This was his first work since his last race. In his last start he won a maiden race going 1 1/8 miles on the main track at Aqueduct on Dec. 8 for trainer Todd Pletcher.

Top Gun Rocket (Into Mischief), worked three furlongs in 35.7 seconds at Palm Meadows. It was the fastest of eight works at the distance. This was his first work since his last race. In his last start he placed eighth in a maiden race going 1 1/16 miles on the main track at Churchill Downs on Nov. 25 for trainer Riley Mott.
