Work tab: Flightline, Speaker's Corner rev up for Met Mile clash
Six days before Belmont Park hosts eight Grade 1 stakes Saturday on a single card, prospective starters in those races made final major preparations Sunday morning.
Flightline and Speaker’s Corner were among two of the Sunday workers. Both are probable for the $1 million Metropolitan Handicap (G1).
At Santa Anita, Flightline worked four furlongs in 46.8 seconds, fastest of 78 works at the distance. The Met Mile will be the John Sadler trainee’s first start since winning the Malibu Stakes (G1) at seven furlongs Dec. 26.
Back east at Belmont, Speaker’s Corner drilled four furlongs in 48.01 seconds, fifth-fastest of 11 works at the distance. He is also coming off a Grade 1 win at seven furlongs, his coming April 9 at Aqueduct in the Carter Handicap.
“We've had a nice schedule,” trainer Bill Mott told the New York Racing Association’s notes team. “We've got a good foundation and plenty of time to be fresh for this race, so hopefully it works out.
“He seems to be doing well and we got all our works in and been fortunate enough that we haven't missed anything. We did what we wanted to do.”
2021 Breeders’ Cup Sprint hero Aloha West is also probable for the Met Mile. The race offers its winner a “win and you’re in” berth into the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile on Nov. 5 at Keeneland.
