Wolfson High On Majestic Cause

When Majestic Cause joined his stable over the summer, trainer Marty Wolfson had visions of speed for the $700,000 purchase at the 2012 Keeneland April sale.

The unraced 3-year-old colt, though, didn’t show the early brilliance one might expect from one of the stars of a 2-year-olds-in-training sale.

“He’s not a really fast, early speed horse,” Wolfson said. “I thought he was originally because he was bought out of a (2-year-olds-in-training) sale and he was one of the fastest. He had the best clocking in the sale, that’s why he brought so much.”

Majestic Cause, owned by Stonestreet Stables and George Bolton, also wasn’t the precocious type of colt that often impress at 2-year-olds-in-training sales.

“He showed a lot of ability, but he was very green. He didn’t know anything and was always looking around. He was a big clown,” Wolfson said. “He had never been to a racetrack, I don’t think, or maybe just once. Now, he’s way more focused.”

The son of Majestic Warrior, who is set to make his third lifetime start in Friday’s ninth race, debuted at Gulfstream Park on Oct. 26. After breaking slowly from the gate, he closed to finish third in a six-furlong maiden special weights event. Although he got away from the gate a bit slowly again in his return on Nov. 16, Majestic Cause turned in a dominating performance while drawing away to a 4 ¾-length victory at 6 ½ furlongs.

Joel Rosario was named to ride Majestic Cause for the first time in Friday’s one-turn mile optional claiming allowance.

“I think the mile is going to be OK for him,” Wolfson said. “It just takes him a little time to get going then he opens up. Last time, it took him a while, but once he asked him, he opened up good.”
