Tournament veteran Steve Wolfson, Sr. of Ormand Beach, Fla. took down DerbyWars' Saturday $10,000 game with a dramatic flourish!
He then kicked off Saturday's game with a $14.60 score at Hollywood's Race 1 with Lieutenant Seany O. He picked up another $13.20 at Hollywood with Jonny's Choice in Race 2. His Aqueduct race 9 pick Jewel in the Sky placed second, adding $8.70 to his total.
Then the big bombers came in and changed everything. First, Potomac River captured the Grade 2 River City at Churchill Downs. The 45-1 winner was a cap horse, meaning his payoff was capped at $32 to win and $18 to place for DerbyWars scoring purposes. Only three players selected Potomac River, including Dylan McIntosh (dylanm), and Thomas Dupuis (kobe10), the eventual second and third place finishers. But Wolfson wasn't blanked on the River City as he earned $17.20 for longshot Set The Sail who finished second.
His big score came in the very next contest race, in Hollywood's race 4, when 67-1 longshot Royaly Dunn paid out $137 to win, not the type of payoff you see every day, especially at Hollywood Park. Five players in the contest had Royaly Dunn, but it helped Wolfson the most, propelling him to a total of $103.70 with two races left, and an amount which would be good enough to win.
He put the icing on the cake with $11.40 on Taylor Street in Churchill's 10th race to increase his total to the victorious $115.10.
