Wolfie Moves to Turf in Colleen

Wolfie makes the move to the turf for the first time as she takes on seven other 2-year-old fillies in Sunday’s $60,000 Colleen Stakes going five furlongs.
“She’s a really competitive filly,” said Gregg Sacco, who trains the horse for Rising Sun Racing Stables LLC. “She really didn’t handle the deep track last time out, but we aren’t worried about the one post because of her speed out of the gate.”
Last time out in the White Clay Creek at Delaware Park on July 29, Wolfie chased for most of the five and a half furlong event and settled for third behind winner R C’s Daisyduke.
She has worked once since her show finish at Delaware Park. The bullet came on Aug. 9 where she went three furlongs over the fast Monmouth Park main track in :36 2/5, fourth fastest of the 27 horses that went three furlongs on that day.
The 2-year-old filly by Pomeroy out of the Hennessy mare Wolf N Hen broke her maiden in her first attempt over the Monmouth Park dirt on June 19 where she broke well and sat just off the leader before storming home to a three and three-quarter length victory.
“With her pedigree, Pomeroy on one side and Hennessy on the other, I think she will like the grass,” said Sacco. “She has a lot of gate speed so we expect to her to have no problems breaking from the one post.”
Each of the eight starters in the Colleen has only won once in their career with Jorge Navarro’s Rosebud’s Tiger being the only filly who broke her maiden on the turf. Four of the eight starters are coming from prior stakes company with Wesley Ward’s Ruby Notion, the morning-line favorite, coming out of the Windsor Castle Stakes at Royal Ascot.
Nik Juarez will be aboard Wolfie for the third time, looking for his first career stakes win.

Gates open at 11:30 a.m., with first post at 12:50 p.m.
