Winx backer places record bet on Cox Plate defense

Pressure will be on more than Winx and her connections when she goes for a 22nd straight victory Saturday in Australia’s Group 1 Cox Plate at Moonee Valley.

The TAB sports book accepted its highest-ever wager on Winx — $106,500 — to defend her back-to-back Cox Plate victories at a potential return of $1.15, third-lowest in the race’s history.

Phar Lap won the Cox Plate in 1930 ($1.14) and 1931 ($1.07).

Winx drew barrier six in a field of nine set to go 2,040 meters, or about 10 furlongs. Post time Saturday is 1:30 a.m. ET.

TAB has also accepted wagers of $50,000 and $28,000 on Winx — and that’s just since Monday.
