Wilshire fair odds: Logical end to coast-to-coast Pick 5
Seven entered the Grade 3 Wilshire Stakes on Saturday at Santa Anita Park, but both the morning line and my fair odds portend a three-horse race among the fillies and mares going one mile on turf.
Despite the narrow trio of choices, it is a tough race to end the coast-to-coast Pick 5 bet because tripling up on the logical horses in a short field is a tough proposition.
The low-takeout, retail-only, $1 wager begins with race 12 at Gulfstream Park and includes the Florida Derby (G1) between the pair of Santa Anita races.
Tirupati is the 7-5 morning line favorite and is my most likely winner at 2-1. That is an underlay on the board in the win pool, but I think she still would be worth singling in this type of wager.
She started this year with a win at this course and distance, and both her stakes starts ahead of this were solid efforts behind good horses who did not enter here. Add that she is getting four pounds from the other logicals, Alpha Bella and Uncorked, and she is the lean.
When it comes to this race itself, I will be adaptable depending on who takes money, including being open to a horse such as Tahini, who will need a new rider. She could be a potential exotics key as a front-runner who will be fresh off the 4 1/2-month layoff.
