Winchell Thoroughbreds’ Wicked Deed,  unhurried early, rallied boldly when set down for the drive and drew off late for an impressive 6 1/4-length maiden win against 10 other juvenile fillies in Monday’s featured $45,000 sprint at Fair Grounds.

Ridden by Fair Grounds’ defending jockey champion Shaun Bridgmohan and conditioned by Fair Grounds’ defending trainer champion Steve Asmussen, Wicked Deed toured the three-quarter mile distance in 1:12.18, increased her career earnings to $29,760 with her first win in three trips to the post and paid mutuels of $29.20, $9.60 and $7.40.

Front-running even-money favorite Reigning Cats, owned by Newt Strandemo and Pat Sutherland, notched early splits of 22.58 and 47.14, could not stay with the winner when challenged but held the runner-up spot by a head over Dede McGehee’s St. John’s River.

Reigning Cats paid $3.20 and $2.60 while St. John’s River returned $7 for the show.
