Wow Whata Summer pulls an 83-1 shocker in the Penn Mile
Wow Whata Summer, a Summer Front colt who had never crossed the wire first, sprung a massive upset in the Grade 2, $400,000 Penn Mile under jockey Tyler Conner at Penn National on Friday.
Dispatched at 83-1 in an eight-horse field, Wow Whata Summer pressed fractions of 24.08 and 49.50 for the opening half mile set by Uncaptured Spirit before passing that rival entering the second turn. Wow Whata Summer reached six furlongs in 1:14.43 on a course listed as soft and then in the stretch, comfortably held off odds-on favorite Annapolis to score for trainer James Lawrence II.
Previously unbeaten Annapolis, who was making his first start since last October's Pilgrim Stakes for trainer Todd Pletcher, stalked the pace in third throughout but was unable to catch the winner when set down for the drive by Irad Ortiz Jr.
Wow Whata Summer, a homebred for Jeremy Brooks, completed the mile in 1:42.39. He paid $168.80 as the second-longest shot on the board. Uncaptured Spirit held for third with Red Danger rounding out the superfecta.
Wow Whata Summer won his debut via disqualification at Colonial Downs last summer. He then earned minor shares in three straight stakes at Colonial Downs and Laurel Park before closing out his juvenile campaign with an off-the-board effort in a dirt allowance.
This was Wow Whata Summer's second start as a 3-year-old. He prepped for the Penn Mile with a third-place finish behind winner Uncaptured Spirit in a Laurel Park allowance on April 23.
