Who's fastest? Comparing Preakness horses' speed figures
Speed figures and ratings have become a handicapping staple in recent years, attempting to label how horses that have covered various distances and at differing class levels equate when brought together. They are, in essence, a measure of how fast a horse has run, but not how fast he could run.
Before the Kentucky Derby we performed a similar exercise, comparing speed figures of all 20 contenders from the major players: Beyer, Brisnet and TimeformUS.
Justify's numbers stuck out, and he backed them up with a win. However, the runner-up, Good Magic, offered significantly lower speed figures coming into the Derby than a number of rivals he beat.
So this is not fool proof, but the numbers are worth knowing. Here's another go at it featuring 2018 Preakness Stakes contenders.
