There are two quality speed horses entered in Sunday's Grade 2 Santa Ynez Stakes, the featured race -- and a Kentucky Oaks qualifier -- at Santa Anita Park.
So, which one will hang around throughout the seven furlongs, and which one will fold late?
USE: #5 War Heroine
War Heroine ran them off their feet in a dazzling display of early speed in her Del Mar debut at 6 1/2 furlongs on Nov. 12 (finished first by 6.75 lengths). Under the expert guidance of Flavien Prat, she cantered home in a gallop last time, and Peter Miller's $37,000 bargain purchase shows two bullet workouts for this assignment.
TOSS: #1 Artistic Diva
Artistic Diva is 2-for-2 and exits a strong front-running win on the surface switch in the Anoakia Stakes at six panels. The big drawback today is the inside post, which will force jockey Victor Espinoza to use valuable early energy to secure position. She will not get loose on the lead if War Heroine breaks alertly, and she might be in deep water along the fence.
