Newspaperofrecord, 'a freaky horse,' romps in Breeders' Cup

Newspaperofrecord looked the part of a 3-5 favorite — and that might have been a bit of a steal — as the unbeaten Chad Brown trainee stretched her record to 3-for-3 in Friday’s Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf at Churchill Downs.

Under jockey Irad Ortiz Jr., the Irish-bred broke on top, set all the fractions and burst away in deep stretch. The final time for a mile was 1:39, and the margin of victory 6 3/4 lengths.

This one looked easy.

The win marked the second straight in the Juvenile Fillies Turf for Brown, who took the race in 2017 with Rushing Fall. It was also his fifth win overall.

Brown said he was “very confident, but you never know with an international field like this.”

He touted Newspaperofrecord’s ability to break like a sprinter but delivers a strong final kick.

“What a freaky horse,” Brown said, adding that Newspaperofrecord is "up there with some of the best he's trained."

Newspaperofrecord is campaigned by Seth Klarman's Klaravich Stables. Klarman's had quite a recent run as a minority owner of the World Series-winning Boston Red Sox.

Newspaperofrecord delivered him another victory by clicking through fractions of 24.06, 48.58 and 1:13.75.

East got up for second with Stellar Agent third in the full field of 14.

Brown and Ortiz Jr. have long pointed to this race with Newspaperofrecord, who prepped with an equally easy win in Belmont Park's Miss Grillo Stakes (G2). Brown went overseas to purchase her at auction.

“We decided to go over there and try a new market because we’re always looking to change our model a little bit," Brown said.

"In Saratoga, he had this filly and told me, 'I've got a very nice filly for you,'" Ortiz Jr. added. "I want to say thanks to him because he picked the filly for me. He told me, 'You're going to win the Breeders' Cup."

Three-plus moments later, he did.
