Weyburn's next start is likely to be in Pennsylvania Derby

Weyburn, who finished fourth in the Jim Dandy (G2) last out, is being pointed to the Sept. 25 Pennsylvania Derby (G1) for his next start.

Trainer Jimmy Jerkens confirmed the plan in a text message to Horse Racing Nation Monday.

Jerkens told HRN after the July 31 Jim Dandy that he was surprised at the Pioneerof the Nile colt's disappointing performance, where he finished behind Essential Quality, Keepmeinmind and Masqueparade.

"He looked like he was training so superbly going into it," Jerkens said. "I was surprised he didn't offer more resistance than he did. He was playing pretty close to decent pace and all that, but I thought he was ready for the race of his life. So overall, it was disappointing."

Jerkens said at the time that he was considering the Queen's Plate for Weyburn's next start, although the three-week turnaround was a bit short. And he said the connections had hoped to go the route of the Travers (G1), won Saturday by Essential Quality.

Since the Jim Dandy, Weyburn has worked twice at Saratoga, most recently breezing four furlongs in 51.16 seconds on Wednesday.

Also expected for the Pennsylvania Derby is Hot Rod Charlie, looking for his first win since the Louisiana Derby (G2). First Captain, third in the Curlin after starting 3-for-3, also is reportedly headed to Parx for the race. Medina Spirit, winner of Sunday's Shared Belief, is a possibility for the race, though trainer Bob Baffert said Awesome Again Stakes (G1) on Oct. 2 is also an option. That event is a win-and-you're-in Breeders' Cup Classic qualifier and would pit the Kentucky Derby winner against older runners.
