Although Cupid is already the morning line favorite, the West Virginia Derby should be even easier for him with the scratches of Mo Tom and Economic Model. Cupid, trained by Bob Baffert, garnered a lot of attention on the Kentucky Derby trail after his Rebel victory, but then finished 10th in the Arkansas Derby and was last of five in the Easy Goer. He redeemed himself last time out with an impressive score in the Indiana Derby.
With Economic Model out, Suddenbreakingnews has become the second choice. The Donnie Von Hemel trainee is seeking his first win since the Southwest Stakes in February. While he finished strong in both the Arkansas Derby (2nd) and the Kentucky Derby (5th), he lacked a late kick in the Belmont and ran ninth.
