Louisiana Derby (G2) winner Wells Bayou, third on the points leaderboard for the 2020 Kentucky Derby, will miss the Sept. 5 race because of bone bruising.

Trainer Brad Cox said Wednesday the son of Lookin at Lucky is suffering from "nothing major" but that "he's going to be out for a while," through the Triple Crown series.

Cox said the injury became apparent because "I just wasn't happy with the way he was training."

After taking the March 21 Louisiana Derby on the front end, Wells Bayou faded from a front-running position most recently when running fifth in Nadal's division of the May 2 Arkansas Derby (G1).

Off the board just twice in six starts, Wells Bayou is campaigned by Clint and Lance Gasaway, Madaket Stables and Wonder Stables.

He's the second Derby hopeful to drop out of contention Wednesday.

In his first workout since winning Churchill Downs' May 23 Matt Winn Stakes (G3), Maxfield suffered a non-displaced condylar fracture Wednesday morning at Keeneland.

Jimmy Bell, head of Godolphin's U.S. operations, said the Street Sense colt -- unbeaten in his three starts -- will undergo surgery to repair the injury in his right front leg and miss the rescheduled Derby. (See the full report here.)
