Weekend Hideaway Dominates at Gulfstream Park West
Red and Black Stable’s Weekend Hideaway took advantage of a chance to run in Sunday’s featured $50,000 allowance at Gulfstream Park West, rolling to a dominating 6 ½-length victory under Tyler Gaffalione.
The 5-year-old son of Speightstown only drew into the third-race field Sunday morning when the five-furlong sprint was moved from the turf course to the sloppy main track. The main-track-only entrant was sent to post as the 6-5 favorite in a six-horse field and came through for his backers in a big way.
“We were looking for a good spot to get a win under this horse’s belt. It’s been a while since he’s won a race,” trainer Phil Serpe said. “It came up right for us today.”
Weekend Hideaway ($4.60) had been winless in seven starts since taking the $100,000 Sunshine Millions Sprint at Gulfstream Park Jan. 17. He finished sixth in the Vosburgh (G1) at Belmont in September and was coming off a second-place finish in an optional claiming race at Gulfstream Park West Nov. 11.
Weekend Hideaway broke alertly from his far-outside post position to press the pace set by Grade 3 winner Speechify, the 2-1 second choice ridden by Juan Leyva, along the backstretch and into the far turn. Rounding the turn into the homestretch, the New York-bred horse edged Speechify and drew away unchallenged through the stretch.
The Serpe trainee ran five furlongs in 57.65 seconds. Do the Roar and jockey Carlos Olivero closed for second, 1 ¼ lengths ahead of Breitling Flyer and jockey Luca Panici. Speechify, making his first start since falling over a horse in the Woodford (G3) at Keeneland, faded to fifth.
Rainbow 6 Carryover Stands at $55,905 for Wednesday’s Card
The 20-cent Rainbow 6 will offer a $55,905.76 carryover when live racing at Gulfstream Park West resumes on Wednesday.
There were no tickets sold with all six winners Sunday, when tickets with five of six winners were each worth $3,782.46.
The popular multi-race wager has gone unsolved since being hit for $75,095.92 on Nov. 8.
The Rainbow 6 carryover jackpot is paid out only when there is a single unique ticket sold with all six winners. On days when there is no unique ticket, 70 percent of that day’s pool goes back to those bettors holding tickets with the most winners, while 30 percent is carried over to the jackpot pool.
