Fillies and mares are scheduled to run 1 mile and 70 yards in Race 3 at Presque Ise Downs Wednesday. This is a low-level maiden claimer, which means there will be several horses with questionable or inconsistent form.

Nevertheless, there is value.

A couple of these fillies come out of a May 16 race, and watching the replay does make a notable difference in how the race is perceived.

#2 Sonic Echo (12-1) – This is not the best horse in the race. But she receives attention for staying relatively close to a fast pace in the local May 16 race. The field initially separated into two groups, and she was closer to the first one and earned a competitive 73 TimeformUS Speed Figure at the end. Her trainer’s statistics are low and the jockey is not a help either. Those two factors will keep the value high. While this is a bit of a wild shot, she is usable underneath.

#8 Lalun Charm (5-2) – The actual best horse from the May 16 race made a good move late to finish second. Compare this to Cougaress, who finished three lengths behind Lalun Charm while never getting truly involved. In watching the replay, the winner and this mare were clear of Cougaress, Sonic Echo and the other horses late. For what it is worth, Sonic Echo did more running early in the race, but this gal sustained her run and held a chance to win. It is time to graduate.

#1 Lacee (3-1) – This filly attended a fast pace too on May 23. The field separated into two flights, just like in the other discussed race. She sat one length off the lead and moved on the far turn, almost looking like she put the field away. Synthetic is a strange surface, as the course dynamics ate her up down the stretch when she faded to third. It was still a good effort.

The plays below are not a misprint. These are two suggested backwheels, where a decent longshot horse who is unlikely to win is keyed underneath. If Sonic Echo falls below 10-1, forget about it.

The Plays:

Trifecta – 1,4,5,8,9 / 1,4,5,8,9 / 2
Exacta – 1,4,5,8,9 / 2
