Watch: Undefeated Flightline drills 5 furlongs at Santa Anita
Undefeated Flightline continued his preparations for the $6 million Breeders' Cup Classic when working five furlongs in 1:00.4 at Santa Anita on Saturday.
Trainer John Sadler's assistant Juan Leyva was in the irons for the drill, which was conducted after the track's renovation break at 9:30 a.m. EDT. Flightline clicked off fractions of 12.2, 24.4, 36.2 and 48.2 seconds before completing the final furlong in 12.2 seconds.
Sadler texted a "thumbs up" when asked if Flightline cooled-out in good order. He also confirmed the plan is to ship Flightline to Keeneland a week early in order to get a work over the track ahead of the Nov. 5 Classic.
“He went nice and easy, no heavy lifting,” Sadler said. “We’ve got plenty of time. There was a pretty large group on hand to watch him. We’re just trying to embrace everything, lean into it.
This was Flightline's second work following his 19 1/4-length demolition in the Sept. 3 Pacific Classic (G1) at Del Mar that ran his record to 5-for-5. He is scheduled to work the next three Saturday's at Santa Anita before heading to Keeneland.
A 4-year-old colt by Tapit, Flightline won the Metropolitan Handicap (G1) at Belmont Park in June in his only other start this year. His five victories, which also includes last December's Malibu (G1) at Santa Anita, have come by a combined 62 3/4 lengths.
At Costa Rica-based Bovada, Flightline is a heavy 1-2 favorite in Breeders' Cup Classic futures.
