Synthetic track racing at Gulfstream Park kicked off Thursday with the first race on the program, a conditioned $12,500 claimer going 1 1/16 miles on the new Tapeta surface.
While it took a whole 1:48.08 to complete, it was favorite Emoji Guy who launched from off the pace on the second turn and led the entirety of the stretch to win under Edwin Gonzalez for trainer Kathleen O'Connell. Farm Boy (13-1), who attended the pace through progressively slower fractions of 23.96, 48:64 and 1:14.49, battled on determinedly to hold second. Brett's World, the 5-2 second choice, also was on the pace with Farm Boy, and checked in third.
Emoji Guy returned $5.60. The $1 exacta paid $30.20 and the 50-cent trifecta came back $33.15.
Gulfstream Park, which is not currently racing on turf because of course maintenance, says it is the first pari-mutuel track in the Americas with three distinct racing surfaces.
Three more Tapeta races were scheduled for Thursday: the third is a maiden-claimer going 5 1/2 furlongs with a field of nine; the fifth, an open maiden race for 2-year-olds going 5 1/2 furlongs also with a field of nine; and the seventh, a starter allowance going one mile and 70 yards with a field of six after a scratch.
