Amid thunder, lightning and rain,
8-5 favorite Vionnet, with Garrett Gomez up, charged through the lane to win
Santa Anita’s 10-horse, $50,000 Pebble Beach Purse for fillies and mares,
winning by 1 ¼ lengths while getting a mile over a rain-dampened turf in
1:36.19.
Due to sporadic heavy rainfall
throughout the afternoon, the turf course was listed as “good” prior to the
Pebble Beach, which was run as the day’s seventh race.
Idle since running second in the
China Doll Stakes at Santa Anita on March 10, the 3-year-old Kentucky-bred
daughter of Street Sense rated kindly in mid pack going to the Club House turn
under Gomez as Ricspretentiousgal and Kevin Krigger carved out fractions of
23.92, 48.55, 1:12.20 and 1:24.20 while getting early pressure from Acenda and
Rafael Bejarano and from Gittel, who was ridden by Alex Bisono.
“This was her comeback race,” said
Gomez. “I couldn’t ask for anything more than the way she ran
today. She’d been away a while so I didn’t want to ask her to do too
much, but she did enough. She finished well.”
Owned by her breeder, Ran Jan Racing
Inc., Vionnet is trained by Mike Puype. The winner’s share of $30,000
boosted her bankroll to $96,890, from a 6-2-2-0 record.
Vionnet paid $5.20, $3.40 and $2.60.
Acenda, who was off at 7-1, badgered
the pacesetting Ricspretentiousgal and overhauled her late but was unable to
withstand the late charge of the winner. Acenda paid $8.40 and $6.20,
while Ricspretentiousgal, the second choice at 9-2, paid $4.20 to show.
Gomez picked up his third win of the
day in the nightcap, winning aboard 9-2 shot Woebegon, which resulted in a Pick
Six carryover into Friday at Santa Anita of $37,823.
First post time for Friday’s
eight-race program is 1 p.m.
