The video below provides a fascinating view of the making of the horse ice sculptures to be featured this weekend at Laurel Park's Winter Carnival. Sculptures will include 2014 Preakness winner and Horse of the Year California Chrome.
Finished sculptures weigh more than 1,800 pounds and are seven feet tall and six feet wide.
Gates open Saturday at 11 a.m. The featured race will be the $300,000 Barbara Fritchie Handicap (G2). The Winter Carnival runs through Monday, Feb. 16 and includes giveaways, prizes totaling $2,500 hidden in an ice wall, and an ice bar with drink specials.
