Video: Get to know apprentice jockey Concepcion

Apprentice jockey Axel Concepcion came to mainland America from his native Puerto Rico on the same path as eventual Eclipse Award-winning jockey Irad Ortiz Jr.

Both attended the Vocational Equestrian School at Camarero Race Track near San Juan, and both turned heads immediately upon arrival. With 32 visits into the winner's circle already on Concepcion's ledger, a stakes win is the next hurdle for the apprentice to clear in his pursuit to become "the next Irad."

Concepcion rode twice in January at Fair Grounds, notching his first mainland win in New Orleans before shifting his tack to the mid-Atlantic, which is where Eclipse Sportswire followed the up-and-comer through snowy wins and morning travels to hone his craft and build business.

This five-minute feature includes photo and video work from Eclipse founder Scott Serio, narration by Eric Patterson, an original score by Billy Trone and additional cinematography by Shannon Hodgson.
