Veterinarian Chan is sentenced to 30 months in doping case

Dr. Alexander Chan, a former veterinarian, was sentenced to 30 months in prison for his involvement in the doping scandal uncovered in 2020 by a federal investigation.

BloodHorse reported that Judge Mary Kay Vyskocil handed down the sentence Wednesday in a federal court in Manhattan.

Chan pleaded guilty in December to a felony count of drug misbranding and adulteration and then began plea-bargain negotiations with prosecutors. He also was ordered to forfeit $331,760.

The federal prosecutor in the case had requested a sentence of 30 months in prison, and the probation office recommended 18 months, according to the report.

The investigation resulted in charges against 31 people. The last defendant to face sentencing in the case is former trainer Jason Servis, who pleaded guilty in December to his role in distributing adulterated and misbranded drugs intended for administration to horses he trained.

He is scheduled to be sentenced July 26 after Vyskocil granted a postponement of his originally scheduled sentencing date last Thursday.
