Velazquez is fined for overuse of crop in Cigar Mile
Hall of Fame jockey John Velazquez was fined $4,017 for overuse of the crop on Mind Control in the Grade 1 Cigar Mile Handicap at Aqueduct on Saturday.
The Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority also suspended him for one day. David Grening of Daily Racing Form said in a Twitter post that the suspension will be served Saturday.
HISA's ruling said Velazquez used the crop seven times, which is one time more than the permissible limit. The fine represented 10 percent of the first-place purse.
The Cigar Mile was the final race for 6-year-old Mind Control, who fended off Get Her Number and White Abarrio to win by a head. The son of Stay Thirsty retired with a career record of 29: 12-3-6 and earnings of $2,185,834, according to Equibase.
From six starts this year, Mind Control had two wins in addition to the Cigar Mile, in the Salvator Mile (G3) and the Parx Dirt Mile.
