If anybody ever wanted a racetrack in
Virginia more than Albert F. “Bert” Allen, Jr., we never met him, and
ever since Colonial Downs opened in 1997 not far from his Varina home,
nobody has spent more time at the New Kent County racetrack.
Allen followed the process closely. He had good reason. An owner and a breeder, Allen was anxious to have his Warwick Stables runners racing closer to home. He also had additional rooting interest in racing here in the Commonwealth – his son Ferris is a pretty good horse trainer.
