After favorite Forte was scratched from Kentucky Derby 2023 on the recommendation of a state veterinarian, Forte's lead owner Mike Repole explained to reporters Saturday morning at Churchill Downs why the horse was scratched.
He talks about Kentucky Horse Racing Commission veterinarian Nick Smith being the one who made the decision.
Repole also owned Uncle Mo, who was the second choice on the morning line when he was scratched on the eve of the 2011 Kentucky Derby because of stomach trouble.
Forte had been the 4-1 favorite in early betting when he was removed from the Derby field Saturday morning. His was the fifth scratch since Thursday, leaving a field of 18 to run for the roses Saturday at 6:57 p.m. EDT at Churchill Downs.
