Unplaced in two previous starts on turf, Pretty Katherine came alive in her return to the surface, winning the $53,400 allowance feature on Wednesday at Hollywood Park.

The longest shot in the field of six at 16-1, Pretty Katherine finished fast to collar pacesetter Burg Berg in the final yards, winning by a neck. She completed the 1 1/16 miles in 1:42.76.

A 4-year-old daughter of Vindication and the Deputy Minister mare Indigene, Pretty Katherine was one of five double digit winners on Wednesday. The surprises triggered a Pick Six carryover of $73,699 for Thursday.

The Pick Six begins on the third race. Post time for the eight race program is 1 p.m.

Owned by William DeBurgh, John Sikura, George Todaro and trainer Jerry Hollendorfer, Pretty Katherine rallied into a slow pace – 24.14 for the opening quarter, 48.02 for the half mile and 1:12.02 for six furlongs – despite racing wide throughout.

Giving jockey Tyler Baze the second of his three wins on Wednesday, Pretty Katherine, who carried 119 pounds, returned $35.60, $12.80 and $5. Burg Berg, the 5-2 second choice under Joel Rosario, paid $5 and $3.40 while finishing 1 ½ lengths in front of 5-2 favorite Chasin Dreams, who was ridden by Rafael Bejarano. The show price on Chasin Dreams was $3.60. Dextera, Theodora and Belmont Cat completed the order of finish.

The win was the fourth in 18 starts for Pretty Katherine, who was bred in Canada by Hill ‘n’ Dale Farm and NETP, and increased her earnings to $160,401.

Baze’s other wins came aboard favored Bella Palooza in the second and 5-1 shot Sheeza Beast in the eighth. Through 19 days of the spring-summer meet, Baze is second in the standings with 25 victories, five fewer than Bejarano.

The only other rider with more than one win was Martin Garcia. He won the first with Plantsite and the third aboard If You Knew Susie.
