Updated Kentucky Oaks clinch scenarios: 9 fillies are in

Nine fillies have assured themselves of invitations to the Grade 1 Kentucky Oaks at Churchill Downs after Friday’s running of the Ashland (G1) at Keeneland lifted the top finishers and reduced the opportunities left to qualify.

With their 1-2 finish, Leslie’s Rose and Just F Y I pushed their point totals above the old cutline of 65 points. Jody’s Pride also got in despite her seventh-place finish, because the new cutline dropped to 54.

Keeneland: Leslie’s Rose, Just F Y I go 1-2 in Ashland.

Part of the reason was the removal of West Omaha from Oaks consideration. Trainer Brad Cox told Daily Racing Form that the Fantasy Stakes (G2) runner-up last week at Oaklawn would be pointed instead to the Black-Eyed Susan (G2) on May 17 at Pimlico.

Saturday’s Gazelle (G3) at Aqueduct and Santa Anita Oaks (G2) are the last of the Oaks points preps. Each is worth 100-50-25-15-10 points to the top five finishers as long as they are eligible.

In practical terms, that means Bob Baffert-trained Kinza and Nothing Like You will forfeit any points they may earn at Santa Anita, because Baffert is not allowed to compete at Churchill Downs. Since only three other fillies are in the Santa Anita Derby field, the race will carry 175 points at the most and as few as 50 points if all five entrants finish the race.

Gin Gin, who is racing in the Gazelle, appears to have the best chance to earn her way into the Oaks on Saturday since she needs only a top-four finish.

With points and earnings updated by Churchill Downs on Friday, these are the current scenarios for clinching one of the 14 spots in the gate for the Kentucky Oaks on May 3:
