Updated Kentucky Derby odds: Fierceness shortens to 7-2

Fierceness shortened to 7-2 Saturday afternoon in advance wagering for Kentucky Derby 2024. He had lengthened to 4-1 earlier in the day after being 3-1 early in the morning.

As of about 4:50 p.m. EDT, Sierra Leone held steady as the 5-1 second betting choice.

Fierceness, who won the Grade 1 Florida Derby by a record 13 1/2 lengths, was the morning-line favorite at 5-2. Sierra Leone, winner of the Blue Grass (G1) was 3-1.

The win pool stood at $11,009,885.

Undefeated Forever Young was the third choice at 6-1, with Louisiana Derby (G2) winner Catching Freedom the fourth at 8-1. Just a Touch was the fifth choice at 10-1, with Honor Marie 13-1.

Forever Young, who qualified for the Churchill Downs starting gate with a win in the UAE Derby (G1), looks to be the first Japan-bred horse to win the Kentucky Derby.

Encino, who was 20-1 on the morning line, was scratched Wednesday. That cleared the way for Epic Ride, 30-1 on the morning line and 44-1 at last check. Mugatu was scratched off the also-eligible list Friday morning since no other horses defected before the 9 a.m. deadline.
