Robert Evans’ Unitarian will attempt to become the first horse to win the Elkhorn (G2) and Sycamore (G3) in the same year when he faces eight rivals entered Sunday for Thursday’s 20th running of the $100,000 Sycamore at 1½ miles on the turf.
Trained by Todd Pletcher, Unitarian has not run since his victory in the Elkhorn, the spring equivalent of the Sycamore. Javier Castellano has the mount and will break from post position nine.
Only one of Unitarian’s opponents from the Elkhorn will be back Thursday, and that is Andrew Rosen, Robert Trussell Jr., and Gainesway Stable’s Tricky Hat (CHI), who was fifth in the spring race. Trained by Shug McGaughey, Tricky Hat won the John’s Call at Saratoga in August and most recently finished fifth in the Kentucky Turf Cup (G3) at Kentucky Downs.
Jose Ortiz will have the mount on Tricky Hat and break from post position two.
Invading from Canada for the race is Sam-Son Farm’s Aldous Snow. Trained by Malcolm Pierce, Aldous Snow won the Singspiel (G3) this summer at Woodbine at the Sycamore distance. Julien Leparoux has the mount Thursday and will break from post position eight.
The field for the Sycamore, which will go as the eighth race with a 4:42 p.m. ET post time, is as follows: St. Albans Boy (Angel Serpa, 121 pounds), Tricky Hat (CHI) (Ortiz, 121), Holiday Star (Rosie Napravnik, 121), Red Rifle (John Velazquez, 121), Villandry (Shaun Bridgmohan, 121), Mister Marti Gras (Florent Geroux, 121), Cozy Kitten (Rafael Hernandez, 121), Aldous Snow (Leparoux, 123) and Unitarian (Castellano, 125).
