Union Rags, favorite in the Kentucky Derby, redeemed himself in a big way in taking a thrilling Belmont Stakes!
Union Rags, ridden by John Velasquez, scooted up the rail beside frontrunner Paynter in deep stretch to grab the Belmont by a nose. It was the first Belmont entry and win for Union Rags's trainer, Michael Matz.
Paynter, who set an honest pace for the 1 1/2 miles, was second under Mike Smith. It was an unusual triple for Smith, trainer Bob Baffert and Zayat stable, who owned Derby & Preakness runner-up Bodemeister.
Atigun, just off the pace through the race, held on for 3rd, and Street Life closed for 4th.
More to come!
