Wes Welker’s Undrafted, winner of the Jaipur Invitational (G3) at Belmont in June and most recently third in the Kentucky Downs Turf Dash, worked five furlongs in :59.20, best of 27 at the distance, on the fast main track Sunday after the morning renovation break.
Working in company with To My Valentine (FR), Undrafted started four lengths back and wound up on even terms at the wire while producing fractions of :12.40, :24.20 and :36 and galloping out in 1:12.
Trainer Wesley Ward is pointing Undrafted, a graduate of Keeneland’s 2011 September Yearling Sale, to the $1 million Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint (G1) at Santa Anita on Nov. 1, the same day he plans to run To My Valentine in the $100,000 Sen. Ken Maddy (G3). Both races are at 6½ furlongs.
Ward has six other horses under consideration for the Breeders’ Cup stabled at Keeneland, where they have had most of their works on the grass. Before the contingent ships west, Ward hopes to get another work in this week on the turf, something he was unable to do last week when the course was closed for training because of weather Tuesday and Thursday.
“My Friday horses (for races Oct. 31) will ship a little earlier and the rest will stay here until the 28th,” Ward said.
