Underdog Jeranimo tames Santa Anita

Geronimo, a Native American of the Apache Indian tribe, fought the United States and Mexico for almost 30 years in what is now the Southwestern United States.

Needless to say, Geronimo was a big underdog in most of the skirmishes and battles he fought during this three-decade period of American history. Despite the odds, Geronimo built a record against his adversaries which makes him known to most Americans 150 years later.

It should be noted that Las Vegas odds makers were not around at that time to post the spreads or offer proposition bets. Had they been, and assuming the Apaches were a sporting people, surely the Chiricahua Apache tribe would own Nevada today.

Like his presumed namesake, Jeranimo, the Florida-bred winner of the Strub Stakes (gr. 2) at Santa Anita, had the underdog role in most of his battles before Saturday's big victory. Although Jeranimo's racing campaign has been much shorter than Geronimo's historic struggle.
