3-for-3 Dry Stout picks up Kentucky Derby points with Japan win

Undefeated Dry Stout picked up 20 Kentucky Derby qualifying points with a win in the Zen-Nippon Nisai Yushun at Japan's Kawasaki Racecourse.

The 1,600-meter race is one of four Japanese races that offer Derby points.

Trained by Mitsunori Makiura and ridden by Keita Tosaki, Dry Stout won by 2 1/2 lengths over Combustion

This was a stretch in distance for Dry Stout, a son of 2006 Bluegrass Stakes (G1) winner Sinister Minister. Previously, Dry Stout had a maiden win over 1,200 meters at Chukyo and a five-length allowance romp over 1,400 meters at Tokyo.

Consigliere had been atop the Japan leaderboard for the Kentucky Derby after earning 10 points for winning the Nov. 27 Cattleya Stakes. The two remaining races on the Japan trail are the Feb. 7 Hyacinth at Tokyo Race course, offering 30-12-6-3 points, and the April 2 Fukuryu at Nakayama, with 40-16-8-4 points available.

One of the 20 spots in the Kentucky Derby starting gate is available to the horse with the most points on the Japan trail.
