Uncle Lino Gets Class Relief in California Chrome Stakes

Third behind Exaggerator and Mor Spirit in the Grade I Santa Anita Derby April 9, Uncle Lino will make his Los Alamitos debut in the $150,000-guaranteed California Chrome Stakes Saturday.
Offered at 1 1/16 miles for 3-year-olds, the California Chrome, named for the 2014 Horse of the Year who has been based primarily at Los Alamitos since the beginning of 2014, is the eighth of nine races. Post time Saturday is 2 p.m.
The next-to-last day of the Spring meet also includes a California Chrome T-shirt giveaway – one per paid admission while supplies last.
Owned by Tom Mansor, Purple Shamrock Racing and trainer Gary Sherlock, Uncle Lino, a son of Uncle Mo and the Orientate mare Haysee, has won once in six starts and earned $226,160.
Bred in Kentucky by JPR Stable, Uncle Lino has been worse than third only once. Two races before the Santa Anita Derby, the $52,000 yearling purchase finished second behind Mor Spirit in the Grade III Robert B. Lewis.
Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert entered a pair – Malibu Sunset and Let’s Meet in Rio.
Owned by Gary and Mary West, Malibu Sunset, a son of Bernardini and the Storm Cat mare One Stormy Mama, will be making his stakes debut after beginning his career with two impressive wins.
After a 10 ¼ length victory in his sprint debut for trainer Wayne Catalano, Malibu Sunset was shipped to Baffert. The dark bay responded with a 1 ½ length score as he stretched to a mile Feb. 28 at Santa Anita. Malibu Sunset has earned $58,800.
Owned by breeder Juddmonte Farms, Inc., Let’s Meet in Rio returns to the scene of his lone victory as he makes his first start since finishing fifth of six in the Lewis.
A son of Flatter and the Storm Cat mare Rio Carnival, Let’s Meet in Rio won going one mile vs. maidens last Dec. 5. He’s banked $51,290 in five starts.
Trainer Art Sherman, who will welcome California Chrome back to his local home Sunday, is scheduled to start Mishegas Saturday.
A gelded son of Include owned by a partnership that includes Zvika Akin, Robert Bach, GP Stable and William Zellerbach, Mishegas has won three of nine and earned $78,380.
Out of the Golden Missile mare Peachez’n’kreme, Mishegas comes off an 11-1 upset in an optional claimer - at the California Chrome distance – March 27.
Trained by A.C. Avila for Charles Casale and Roddy Valente, One More Round is a four-race maiden, but the Discreet Cat colt was second behind the Baffert-trained Collected in the Grade III Lexington Stakes April 16 at Keeneland.
A runner-up in both of his races around two turns, One More Round is out of the E Dubai mare Leinster Lady and has earned $44,810.
Rare Candy, who chased Mishegas last month, will be seeking his first win on dirt for Tarabilla Farms, Inc. and trainer David Hofmans.
A Twirling Candy gelding out of the Fusaichi Pegasus mare Bold Pegasus, Rare Candy, who broke his maiden on turf last July 26 at Del Mar, is 1-for-8 with earnings of $110,450.
Trainer John Sadler and owner Kosta Hronis, who won the $75,000 Surfside with Uptown Twirl April 24, will try for their second stakes success win of the Spring meet with Curlin Rules.
A Curlin colt out of the Boundary mare Awe That, Curlin Rules finished third behind Mishegas and Rare Candy in his last start. He’s earned $40,810 with one win in three attempts.
Touched by Autism returns to Southern California for owner Johnny Taboada and trainer Marcia Stortz after consecutive victories at Golden Gate Fields.
A son of Sierra Sunset and the Beau Genius mare Beau’s Gem, Touched by Autism was a winner in his lone try on dirt, defeating California bred maidens as the 6-5 favorite over a good track Jan. 7 at Santa Anita.
Bred by George and Mary Clare Schmitt, Touched by Autism has three wins in eight races and earnings of $100,281.
Well-beaten over a muddy track in the Grade I Wood Memorial April 9 at Aqueduct, Dalmore will try to rebound for Big Chief Racing LLC, Rocker O Ranch LLC and trainer Keith Desormeaux.
A son of Colonel John and the Silver Deputy mare Silver Breeze, Dalmore has one win in eight starts and earnings of $89,502. The Florida bred broke his maiden at 8 ½ furlongs March 25 at Santa Anita.
