The Grade 3, $100,000 Berkeley Stakes continued to elude Bold Chieftain on Monday at Golden Gate Fields as the 8-year-old with 17 wins and $1,578,291 in earnings lost by a head for the third straight year.
In 2009, he lost to Autism Awareness in a 30-to-1 upset. In 2010, Run It turned the tables on him after losing by at least 4 lengths in three previous meetings. On Monday, the well-traveled Uh Oh Bango out-gamed him in a duel over the final eighth of a mile.
"I guess this race is just beyond him for whatever reason," said Russell Baze, Bold Chieftain's regular rider. "We'll have to come back next year and try again."
