A dozen three-year-old thoroughbreds will compete in the $550,000 Spiral Stakes at Turfway Park this Saturday, and one will go on to qualify for the famed Kentucky Derby.

Entries for the 44th running of the Spiral Stakes ended Sunday with the following horses entering the meet: Another Lemon Drop, Big Family, Conquest Typhoon, Dubai Sky, Firespike, Imperia, Magic of Believing, Metaboss, Royal Son, Task Force Glory, Watchyourownbobber and Wireless Future.

“We’re getting close to the big day and the excitement is starting to build,” said Turfway Park General Manager Chip Bach. “Once we announce the post positions, the picture is clear and we are full speed ahead.”

A dozen fillies also entered the Grade 3, $150,000 Bourbonette Oaks, a one-mile, 85-point qualifier for the Kentucky Oaks, the filly counterpart to the Derby. Those thoroughbreds are: Back Flip, Bossy, College Holly, Don’t Leave Me, Flat Deposit, Harlan’s Destiny, Right on Kitten, Sharla Rae, Sweet on Smokey, Sweet Success, Urtheoneeyelove and Walking the Kitten.

While a hefty purse is at stake, the Spiral Stakes is also one of 34 qualifying races in the United States and Dubai for the prestigious Kentucky Derby, which runs this year on May 2.

Post Positions will be drawn on Wed., March 18 inside the Diamond Lounge of Horseshoe Cincinnati. The Call to the Post luncheon will start at 11:30 a.m. and the post positions will be drawn around 12:45 p.m. Media is welcome to attend.
