Veteran race caller Tony Calo will begin his position as the new track announcer for Turfway Park when the 2023-24 season opens Wednesday, Nov. 29.

“I’m very honored and thankful to everyone at Turfway Park and Churchill Downs Inc. for offering me this position,” Calo said. “Turfway has a storied history in Northern Kentucky and is quickly rising to one of the top tracks during the winter season.”

Originally from California, Calo began his announcing career in summer of 1997 at Arapahoe Park in Colorado. He returned to California one year later, where he called at Bay Meadows and Golden Gate Fields. For the last 15 years, Calo has served as the track announcer for Finger Lakes in upstate New York.

Calo will take over the announcing duties at Turfway Park from Jimmy McNerney, who will continue his role as a jockey agent.

Turfway Park’s holiday meet will run through Dec. 30, and the winter-spring meet will span Jan. 3 – March 30.
