Modern Games, the 2022 champion male turf horse, has been retired from racing at age 4.

Owner and breeder Godolphin said in a news release that stud plans for the Ireland-bred colt would be announced later. No reason for his retirement was disclosed.

Trained by Charlie Appleby, Modern Games won the Breeders' Cup Mile last year and the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf in 2021. Other Grade or Group 1 wins came in the Al Shabab Lockinge at Newbury in May and the Woodbine Mile and Poule d'Essai des Poulains last year. In his most recent start, he finished fourth in the Queen Anne Stakes (G1) at Ascot.

"Modern Games was a brilliant horse to train and such a great advert for Godolphin," Appleby said in the news release. "To win at two Breeders’ Cups, to be part of our trio of Guineas winners in 2022, and to land the Lockinge Stakes this season shows his class, toughness and durability. He answered every call we asked of him, and we will miss him at Moulton Paddocks. I’m sure he will be a huge success in his next career as a stallion."

For his career, the son of Dubawi had a record of 16: 8-4-1 and earnings of $3,571,418.
