Tuesday works: Coal Battle leads graded winners on tab

Coal Battle drilled at Churchill Downs on Tuesday for trainer Lonnie Briley. The 3-year-old son of Coal Front breezed four furlongs in 52.8 seconds, slowest of seven at the distance. This was his first timed work since the Grade 3 Matt Winn at Churchill Downs.

Coal Battle finished third in the Matt Winn (G3) June 8, after making contact leaving the gate and having to check. Before that, he finished a disappointing 11th in the Kentucky Derby 2025 and third in the Arkansas Derby (G1) at Oaklawn on March 29.

Coal Battle
(Coal Front), a Grade 2 winner (2025 Rebel), worked four furlongs in 52.8 seconds at Churchill Downs on Tuesday morning. It was the slowest of seven works at the distance. This was his first work since his last race. In his last start, he placed third in the Matt Winn (G3) going 1 1/16 miles on the main track at Churchill Downs on June 8 for trainer Lonnie Briley.

Emmanuel (More Than Ready), a Grade 2 winner (2022 Pennine Ridge), worked five furlongs in 1:00.4 at Turfway Park on Tuesday morning. It was the fastest of eight works at the distance. His previous work was eight days ago going four furlongs at Churchill Downs. In his last start, he placed fourth in the Lake Ouachita going 1 1/16 miles on the main track at Oaklawn on May 3 for trainer Mike Maker.

Howbeit (Secret Circle), a Grade 2 winner (2022 Santa Anita Sprint Championship), worked five furlongs in 1:01.6 at San Luis Rey on Tuesday morning. It was the third fastest of five works at the distance. This was his first work since his last race. In his last start, he placed second in a starter allowance race going six furlongs on the main track at Santa Anita on May 31 for trainer Peter Miller.

Speed King (Volatile), a Grade 3 winner (2025 Southwest), worked four furlongs in 50.2 seconds at Churchill Downs on Tuesday morning. It was the fourth fastest of seven works at the distance. His previous work was 16 days ago going four furlongs at Churchill Downs. In his last start, he placed sixth in the Arkansas Derby (G1) going 1 1/8 miles on the main track at Oaklawn on March 29 for trainer Ron Moquett.
