Tuesday works: Coal Battle leads 10 graded winners on tab

Coal Battle drilled at Churchill Downs on Tuesday ahead of his start in Sunday’s Grade 3 Matt Winn.

The 3-year-old son of Coal Front breezed three furlongs in 36.8 seconds, second fastest of six at the distance. This was his fourth timed work since the Kentucky Derby.

Coal Battle finished 11th in Kentucky Derby 2025 after racing four wide and having to steady. Before that, Lonnie Briley’s colt won consecutive races at Oaklawn in the Smarty Jones and Rebel (G2) and finished third in the Arkansas Derby (G1) on March 29.

In his last start he placed 12th in the Breeders' Cup Classic going 1 1/4 miles on the main track at Del Mar on Nov. 2 for trainer Bill Mott.

Nutella Fella (Runhappy), a Grade 1 winner (2023 Hopeful), worked three furlongs in 35.4 seconds at Saratoga on Tuesday morning. It was the fastest of 15 works at the distance. His previous work was four days ago going four furlongs at Saratoga. In his last start he placed eighth in the Commonwealth (G3) going seven furlongs on the main track at Keeneland on April 8 for trainer Gary Contessa.

It was the second fastest of 19 works at the distance. His previous work was seven days ago going three furlongs at Saratoga. In his last start he placed seventh in the Manhattan (G1) going 1 3/16 miles on the turf at Saratoga on June 8 for trainer Chad Brown.
